Transcript & additional info

  • The production stage was my favourite part because I developed new skills within filming and editing.
  • My teacher Louisa encouraged our group especially and pushed us to do more even when we couldn't, and I appreciate her and her amazing help.
  • I feel like I was successful in my personal blogs are well-structured and detailed.
  • As a group, we worked really hard regardless of the obstacles of disagreements. At the end, we produced a very good title sequence with a moving storyline.
Finally, its over! But all in all,  I have enjoyed studying AS Media Studies and it taught me a lot of life skills I thought I never had.

Bye from us!!!

sign off!!

Firstly i would love to say i really enjoyed this coursework unit, both blogging and filming. It taught me things that i never new and things what i couldn't do , E.G Editing using technologies such as premier pro. At times i could feel very stressed when i had to meet deadlines but knowing  stress comes with practically everything i carried on trying to improve lesson by lesson. Moreover i believe i couldn't have carried on without the help and motivation of my group and teacher , when i had low a self esteem because i couldn't do something my peers was always there to give me suggestions and advice to get around my problem, so i give a massive thanks to my teacher Louisa, my group noah, Ahlaam and Deborah.
Lastly i have great proud to say this has been one of the best coursework units i have taken part in and i hope i will say the same for next year

All the best Rasta Fari.

FINAL TITLE SEQUENCE

Final day of editing - Deadline day!!

Today is the last day for the title sequence to be completed! Finally..
We divided our roles focuses on the key final parts to improve our title sequence, for instance:
  • Ahlaam continued to edit and identify ways to make our title sequence a lot more discrete than narrative. Our initial aim was to make a title sequence that was narrative but due to timing of footage some shots were way too dark to be included. She used many effects such as the flicker effects by using the razor tool. She used the dip in white effective to make the shots quicker and a lot more effective.
  • Deborah continued to edit the title credits such as minimising the font size, ensuring the font size is the same consistently. Deborah added animation to the title credits using the effect called "Jiggy" on After Effects and reduced the amount of jiggyness to 10% to ensure the audience sees the title properly.
  • Rasta & Noah worked on finding more sounds to be added into our title sequence to be layered. They found police siren and heartbeat sounds which suited our title sequence to build tension and match the conventions of Drama.
After all that hard work from over 2-3 months, we have completed our coursework!!

short video of how me and noah learnt how to move sound from mac mac using air drop

Today me and noah learnt how to import sounds from mac to mac using air drop.
in todays lesson me and noah was in charge of sound.

Non-diegetic sounds we are layering on our title sequence

This includes:

  • Footsteps
  • A heartbeat
  • Police sirens
  • The music sound track

Rough Cut of Sound (2) Update

Today, Noah and Rasta were looking for more sounds that would suit our title sequence.  We as a group watched the film Sket title sequence and observed the sound used in the title sequence; as our title sequence is an urban youth drama we decided to go for a grime youthful feel to make the genre a lot more obvious even though our title sequence will be discrete. We was also thinking about layering this sound with other sounds.

Rough Cut of Sound

These are two tracks I have taken from copyright-free websites to put into my title sequence to convey the right concept ; and for the audience to have a greater understanding of the character and the title sequence it self.

About this track
I chose this sound from www.freeplaymusic.com as it doesn't go against any artist's copyrights. Immediately, this track appealed to me mainly because of the gentle strums of the acoustic guitar. The track starts with the guitar being strummed gently as if there is little movement which would be perfect for the shots establishing the location and introducing the characters (Terrell and his friend). Midway of the track, the guitar picks up the pace and gets more exciting and I thought this would be perfect for when Terrell meets his friend and they spud and their journey onwards. This would be effective because it shows and emphasises the relationship between Terrell and his friend using sound. Towards the end, the guitar goes slow again which would be good when we see the shots of Terrell and his friend going into the tube station and going out of frame as we don't know where they're going but as an audience we would be curious to know where they're going ; hence the slow pace of the track to build suspense.

About this track
I chose this sound from www.bensound.com. I heard this sound right after the first option and I instantly felt like it was the right one! The track just confirms the genre of the title sequence it being drama. I really like the transition from just hearing the drums alone and then after eleven seconds we hear different sounds to give this youthful, urban feel. The first eleven seconds could be used for the location shots and then as soon as the character is introduced , the different sounds kick in. The different sounds give off this element of suspense and it would flow really well with Terrell coming down the stairs as well as Drama conventions.

Chosing the right sound (the conclusion)

  • They are both perfect for the title sequences, but I think the second track make the audience comprehend the title sequence a lot more and get a deeper understanding of the main person Terrell. Almost as if they are living in Terrell's world for a day.
  • The Groovy Hip Hop sound will be the sound that will be heard in the title sequence!

Changes made to the title sequence

General explanation of the decision made
  1. After deep analysis and consideration of the current rough cut , the feedback that we received from our class was evident that this title sequence needed a lot of work. Additionally, it was unclear what the main theme of the title sequence was, so we decided to just restart. While in this deep thought, I watched similar youth drama films watching their openings and analysed the different shots they used.
  2. The film openings I looked at was Top Boy, My Brother the Devil and Fish Tank. The similarities they had were they all established the locations and a character before the character makes a journey to somewhere. They also vary between different shots when establishing the location such as wide angles, over shoulder shot but still being able to see the location using a long shot view etc. Thus after watching this, it was decided to change the layout and shot variations.
New layout of shots & shot types
  1. Extreme wide angle of flat/blocks
  2. Extreme wide angle of flat/blocks but a different view
  3. Wide angle of flat/blocks with depth of frame
  4. Wide angle extreme long shot of flats (filling up the frame)
  5. Wide angle with depth of frame (behind Terrell)
  6. Over the shoulder shot of Terrell looking at his friend in extreme long shot
  7. Medium long shot - Terrell's friend waiting and gets out his phone
  8. High angle over the shoulder shot texting Terrell
  9. Close up of Terrell's friend's phone and what he's writing
  10. Low angle point of view shot (from where Terrell's friend is standing) of Terrell on balcony
  11. Tracking forwards shot of Terrell walking along the balcony towards the stairwell
  12. Tracking backwards mid-shot of Terrell walking towards the stairwell
  13. Terrell walks to stairwell (stopping at the top of the camera movement and we see Terrell walking down the stairs from top flight of stairs - 5th floor)
  14. Low angle shot of Terrell walking down stairs onto the next floor ( 3rd floor)
  15. Terrell walking down the stairs of 2nd floor to the 1st floor
  16. High angle long shot of Terrell walking towards and out of the door - most likely a tracking shot
  17. Medium long shot of Terrell walking out of door (camera is outside this time)
  18. Tracking mid shot walking with Terrell walking as he makes his way over to his friend
  19. High angle long shot from the balcony of Terrell walking towards his friend
  20. Different shots of Terrell walking towards his friend
  •  Terrell walking towards his friend a couple of times, each time from a different angle
  • In front, camera tracking backwards (filming right up to Terrell & his friend spudding)
  • From behind, camera behind Terrell walking forwards (filming right up to Terrell & his friend spudding)
  • From the side, camera tracking Terrell walking in a medium close up (just above waist upwards)
21.  Terrell walking towards his friend from his friend’s POV
  • Camera filming Terrell  walking towards his friend from his friend’s POV  where we saw him texting Terrell in previous shot
  • Giving four different shots (three of Terrell and one POV of his friend) about to meet up which will be have a cross between the shots until Terrell and his friend meet
22.  Shots to show Terrell and his friend spudding
  • 1. Camera positioned at the side of Terrell and friend in medium close up to show them spudding and then bringing arms away
  • 2. Camera positioned at birds eye view spudding from just above their hands of their fists coming together
23. Tracking two shot of the two walking out the location (can alternate from backwards and forwards)
24. New location is now established ( East Street Market) using different types of shots
  • Over the shoulder (behind Terrell’s shoulder)
  • Profile close up (on Terrell’s side)
  • Walking towards camera – in long shot (remaining on Terrell’s side)
  • Walking in front of camera in mid shot (do whole length of market if possible or quite a bit of it)
  •  Place camera at the front of the market to see the sign from across the road with camera on tripod. We see them walk out of the market, turn to their right and walk out of frame**
  • ** Possibility: Some shots of colourful market stalls to help use as cut away's e.g. butchers, jewellery stalls, hair stalls **
25. New location - Elephant & Castle tube station
  • Medium long shot of the tube station establishing the new location
  • Camera titled a little and we see Terrell and his friend walking into the tube station (camera at pavement view) watch them go out of frame.
  • Then there's a fade.

What we've done today

AHLAAM- she was editing our title sequence by adding effects to different shots and putting our shots in the order we want them to be in.
She still needs to some more editing in the future lessons and also add credits to our title sequence.

How ahlaam found this lesson?
  • She found the lesson very exciting due to that she learnt new effects
  • As well as it been exciting she found the editing a bit challenging
  • she also found out this lesson as a learning process

RASTA- I was doing blogs for our group including this blog witch sums up this lesson also analysing what ahlaam was doing with the title sequence.
I still need to add more individual blogs i still haven't  completed , and assist ahlaam with more ideas to improve are blog

How Rasta found the lesson?
  • I found the lesson quite laid back due to the fact i am just blogging.
  • I found the lesson as a learning process when watching Ahlaam edit.

DEBORAH- Deborah was also blogging and looking at are feedback and trying to assist ahlaam with ideas  from the feedback to improve our title sequence.
She believes she still needs to improve her personal blogs, add credits to the title sequence and help the group out with group posts.

How Deborah found the lesson?
  • She found the lesson interesting.
  •  She also found the lesson as a learning process.
NOAH - Noah spent the lesson blogging and looking at our feedback with Deborah coming up with ideas together to help assist Ahlam edit our title sequence.
Noah believes that the title sequence can improve and noah can re-shoot if needed to help improve.

How Noah found the lesson?

  • He found it interesting and creative
  • He also found it a learning process, having not known much about editing before the lesson.

Rough Cut Feedback from our class & tips to improve

 Overview of the feedback

Strengths:

  • Established the main character
  • Running in the woods shots were effective and ran smoothly together
  • Beginning of title sequence replicates the match
  • Shots of the main character of the beginning is efficient for showing who is the main character

Weaknesses:

  • Can't tell what genre it is - we must try to make the Drama conventions evident
  • In the beginning of the title sequence, we must try to replicate the match-cut effect
  • Framing of some shots are not as good as they should be - especially when main character was running , we was not able to catch his pace and therefore  not get the right frame
  • Link some shots by adding black screens (create a fade-in or fade-out effect)
  • Have different variety of shots - just get more shots. (e.g. high, low, medium shots etc)
  • The cuts at the beginning need to be longer - (using fade-in or fade-out effect)

What we will do in the next editing session?
  • We will take into consideration of the all the weaknesses listed above. Hopefully, if there is time to reshoot we could reshoot some of the shots that look shaky or the framing isn't good.

Blogging health check feedback

Strengths:
  • Some adequate evidence of filming
  • A good beginning to use ICT to present work
  • Organisation is quite exceptional.
Weaknesses:
  • Increase the use of ICT in my blog posts
  • Time management needs to be improved , go back and check the missing blogs to achieve a higher grade.
  • There needs to be more evidence of filming.

What I need to do:
  • I need to start showing visual evidence of filming with comments showing how each filming session went.
  • Ensure my frequency of blog posts by posting at least 3 or 4 times per week (it being 2 lesson blogs and 2 homework blogs)
  • In my blogs I need to make sure my blogs include CT not just type blogs simply.
  • I must always link the social media page for our filming evidence to show the extra work/evidence completed.
  • Remember to always work hard and let this hard work reflect in my blog posts!!

My take on this feedback:
  •  I am going to take all of this into consideration and go back and improve blogs by using a wide range of ICT websites to present my blogs.
  •  I will provide more evidence of filming.

Therefore i will need to achieve my targets and improve on my weaknesses.
I personally agree with the strengths and weaknesses miss has given me i couldn't have disagreed with anything!
I believe that i am improving as my grades show but me as an individual will want more therefore it is on me to to keep on improving my grades.

WHAT I WANT?

  • Get my marks up to a 14
  • complete all my targets by a certain date
